A third COVID-19 death is recorded in three weeks as new cases escalate.

BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: A third straight weekend COVID-19 death has been recorded of an Allegany County resident as numbers of both deaths and positive cases continue to escalate during July.

The State Health Department reported the latest fatality today as having occurred at an out-of-county state-licensed facility. The Department provides no additional details including, no longer, the day of death.

Fatalities this month are three times the zero fatalities recorded for the entire month last year and combines with increasing numbers of new positive cases in the county, which nearly doubled last week over the prior seven-day period.

The county now has incurred 159 deaths at state-licensed facilities since the start of the pandemic, with 94 occurring at in-county facilities, the last in that category on March 21.

Correlating with Allegany County Department of Health numbers, which only reflect certificates for in-county deaths, it appears the total number of Allegany County resident fatalities having occurred within the state is approximately 165.

As Allegany Hope reported last night, the county recorded 69 new cases of the virus last week, compared with 36 the week before.

The numbers, however, are assumed to be even higher due to an unknown number of positives determined through home testing, a measure which wasn’t available at this time in 2021.

Last year, only five new cases were reported during the comparable time frame, with two the week before.

The new surge is presumed to be due to new omicron variants – BA.5 and BA.4 – which now account for nearly four-out-of-five new cases, although none have been reported yet in Allegany County. The latest test results, however, are over a month behind in reporting.

The county is continuing to request that those testing positive through self or home tests enter the information at https://bit.ly/3zymEWF to aid in better determination as to the number of cases in the county and their general locations.
