Allegany County COVID-19 cases drop slightly but college numbers remain at high levels

BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: New reported COVID-19 cases moderated slightly last week but Alfred college positives continued at significant levels. Weekend hospitalizations at Wellsville went up.

The Allegany County Department of Health reported 98 new cases pursuant to Allegany Hope’s Freedom of Information Law daily filings for localized information, compared with 106 the week before.

These are known cases only, with the actual number assumed to be higher due to home tests, only some of which the county department collects through online self-reporting.

COVID hospitalizations increased from one on Friday at Jones Memorial Hospital to three yesterday. St. James Hospital in Hornell recorded one new admission over the weekend, which is its current total, with Cuba Memorial Hospital Inc., remaining at one and Olean General Hospital at 13.

Changes in reporting practices at Alfred State College and Alfred University, including a breakdown of weekend numbers, result in mismatches between county and state records.

Alfred State is reporting 15 new cases among on-campus resident students between our report last Monday and today, with another 12 off-campus residents, or 27 total.

At Alfred University, there have been seven new student positives total, along with four staff members.

Only in-county student and staff member resident cases are included in Allegany County totals, with off-campus students recorded by zip codes.

There were 13 cases attributed to the Alfred zip code last week, down from 25 the week before, but numbers at Wellsville, where Alfred State has a campus, rose from 28 to 30 week-over-week. They were the only two areas of the county with double-digit numbers of positives.

Other noticeable changes were increases in the Almond zip code, from one to four, and Bolivar, from zero to six.

Our chart of cases and zip code locations for the past two weeks accompanies this story.

Allegany County is continuing to request that those testing positive through self or home tests enter the information at https://bit.ly/3zymEWF to aid in better determination as to the number of cases in the county and their general locations.
