BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: Dropping COVID-19 cases in Allegany County have reversed, with those recorded during the first five days of this week already exceeding the entire last week.
The data comes from our daily Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests to Allegany County, NY, government to obtain localized information.
This week, through Thursday, shows the Wellsville zip code continuing to be the hotspot in the county, with one-half, or 27 of 54 positives county-wide being recorded there, an 11 percent overall increase from the 19 out of 49 cases in that area for all of last week.
Other cases this week have included four in the Friendship zip code and the same number split evenly between Alfred and Alfred Station.
The county had been dropping this month in the number of positives, from a fall surge which peaked at 114 for the week ended October 1.
Hospitalizations Low
Hospitalizations are at low levels as of Thursday, with no COVID patients at either Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville or Cuba Memorial Hospital Inc., and four each at St. James Hospital in Hornell and Olean General Hospital.
The actual number of positive cases is unknown due to the use of home test kits, although the Allegany County Department of Health does capture some of the information through an online self-reporting webpage.
The county is continuing to request that those testing positive through self or home tests enter the information at https://bit.ly/3zymEWF to aid in better determination as to the number of actual cases in the county and their general locations.
County health officials, along with those statewide, are encouraging bivalent booster shots which are specifically targeting BA.4 and BA.5 COVID variants that have been the predominant strains for several months.
They also are strongly suggesting flu shots as soon as possible due to that season appearing to have started early, with suggestions that infections may be at higher levels this year.
Vaccine Clinics Scheduled
Public clinics have been set up through the middle of November in various parts of the county, with further information, schedules and required registration at https://bit.ly/3SQiYYU or (585) 268-9250. They also appear on the Allegany Hope Community Calendar at https://bit.ly/3yYyVUt.
