Allegany County, NY, legislators’ penchant, or habitual liking, for conducting county business behind closed doors, out of view of the general public, has drawn additional scrutiny.
The online Wellsville Sun, in reporting on the Wednesday meeting of the Board of Legislators Planning and Economic Development Committee, at which a $55,000 contract with Alfred State College was trying to be discussed in executive session, says that:
“The challenge by the media and a legislator who reversed course upon receiving better information was beautiful democracy in action,” referring to an objection by Allegany Hope Community News which threw legislator plans into confusion and, subsequently, another direction, resulting in some public discussion of the action.
In a separate action, Allegany Hope last week announced development of a county-wide Open Government Forum to help educate local government officials and the public in regard to the state Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and Open Meetings Law (OML), identify compliance issues, and provide available resources to assist individuals having difficulty with obtaining compliance in various situations.
Those interested in learning more and possibly becoming involved in any number of different ways with the initiative can contact Jones at AlleganyHopeWNY@outlook.com or (484) 435-0503.
