BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: New Allegany County COVID-19 cases jumped by more than 50 percent last week to a rate not seen since the end of May.
The numbers came as the Wellsville zip code experienced a 150 percent surge over the week before, with increases also being seen in several other areas of the county.
Allegany Hope had previewed an anticipated escalation on Friday, based on results of our daily Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests to the county for the first five days of the week for localized data.
The county added 18 new cases Friday and five Saturday, for a total of 82 for the week, compared with 52 the week before.
It significantly exceeded 64 for the weekend ended June 4, which had dropped from 130 for the week which closed out May.
The same week last year started the fall surge of new positives, but at a lower level than Allegany has been experiencing all summer.
This year’s numbers also are believed to be significantly lower than actual tallies due to home testing. The Allegany County Health Department does obtain an unknown portion of those through voluntary online reporting.
In addition to the major jump in new positives in the Wellsville zip code, Cuba rose from seven to 10 week-over-week, Bolivar from five to seven, Friendship from two to six, Houghton from three to five, and Alfred Station from zero to three.
Other total are shown in our chart for the past two weeks which accompanies this story.
COVID hospitalizations at Jones Memorial in Wellsville dropped from six to three on Friday. The State Health Department won’t report weekend results until Tuesday.
Allegany County is continuing to request that those testing positive through self or home tests enter the information at https://bit.ly/3zymEWF to aid in better determination as to the number of cases in the county and their general locations.
