Basic life skills series to be offered in Belmont

A four-week Homesteading series, designed to help develop skills to address basic life needs, will start next Thursday in Belmont.

Literacy West NY, Inc., also known as CORE – The Learning Center, will host the two-part sessions from 9AM to noon on Thursdays and 1PM to 3PM Fridays at its facility at 5455 State Route 19 North.

Certified credit counselors will facilitate the free course, with reading and math testing being provided at both the start and end of the series.

The curriculum includes:
— Week One: Food Preservation, including canning and how to properly freeze food, food safety and nutrition.
— Week Two: Budgeting, including stretching dollars and keeping up on bills.
— Week Three: Financial Literacy, including banking, how to open a checking and savings account, balancing a check book, and how to do online banking safely.
— Week 4: Credit Repair, including obtaining a credit report at no cost, avoiding scams that charge for one’s report, how to read a credit report, and how to repair and improve upon one.
