BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: New COVID-19 cases in Allegany County jumped by more than 20 percent last week, with half the increase from Alfred and Wellsville, while in the meantime, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she won’t be extending the state of emergency pandemic order when it expires at midnight today.
New positives rose from 88 to 106 week-over-week, the highest total since 130 were recorded for the week ended May 28.
There were 28 new cases recorded in the Wellsville zip code and 25 in Alfred, constituting half of the total increase, according to localized data obtained from Allegany County, NY, government through Allegany Hope‘s daily Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests.
As we reported Friday, it appears that outbreaks have occurred at both the Alfred University and Alfred State College campuses, with at least some of the Wellsville numbers increase potentially relating to the Alfred State campus there.
Alfred zip code numbers skyrocketed from four two weeks ago to 25 last week, with Wellsville jumping from 16 to 28.
Alfred University reports 21 new student cases this semester, up from 18 Friday, with three others having been resolved. The three staff positives, with nine additional being concluded, remained steady.
No new data has been attributed to Alfred State by the SUNY campuses tracker since a week ago Sunday when 29 total new cases during the 10-day period before that date had been recorded.
Educational facility numbers don’t match county reports due to some students and staff residing in other zip codes, and aren’t recorded at all in Allegany County if they are living in Steuben or other counties.
No online dashboard has been able to be located for Houghton University this semester. There were three cases reported by the Allegany County Department of Health in the entire Houghton zip code area in each of the past two weeks.
In a reversal of prior increases, the Bolivar zip code plummeted from 12 to zero cases last week versus the week before.

Hochul told reporters in New York City today that she won’t renew the state of emergency since “we are in a different place now, we’ve been making announcements about taking masks off on public transportation, we now have a new booster shot.
“We’re watching the numbers, we feel comfortable we can suspend them” (the emergency orders) which have been in effect since March 2020.
