Dozens learn about emergency preparedness at Houghton, even more at Friendship on Saturday

Some 70 Houghton area residents received an overview on how to be prepared for many types of emergencies, including those involving themselves, their family, pets and businesses, last night during a state Citizen Preparedness Corps training at Houghton Academy.

Lt. Orlano Gayle of the New York National Guard provided the presentation, which also included a free emergency backpack go-kit with basic emergency supplies for each attending household, along with an Emergency Information Handbook, which describes many different natural and domestic emergency situations, for use in advance awareness and planning.

Representatives of the State Office of Emergency Management and Allegany County Emergency Management Director Jeff Luckey also fielded attendee questions.

A duplicate session will be offered from 1:30PM to 3:30PM tomorrow, Saturday, February 10, at the Bible Baptist Church, 43 West Main Street, in Friendship. Pre-registration for a few remaining seats, required to enable receipt of a free go-kit for each household, still is available at

The two events are being coordinated by Allegany Hope Community News, the Academy and the What God is Doing in Friendship ny alliance of churches.

Additional assistance opportunities for individuals and businesses
In addition to the state training, Casey Jones, executive director of Allegany Hope and editor of Allegany Hope Community News, noted opportunities for businesses and profit and nonprofit organizations to become Weather-Ready Nation AmbassadorsTM, and for individuals to become National Weather Service (NWS) SKYWARN spotters and amateur radio, also known as ham radio, operators, to aid in activities involving and in response to adverse weather-related events.

Allegany Hope also has developed a comprehensive weather news reporting system which includes Allegany and adjoining counties by consolidating information posted on this website and its group Facebook page about weather information out of three NWS forecast centers in Buffalo and Binghamton, along with State College, Pa.

It also has created an exclusive Weather Resources page on this website with links to additional local, area, regional and national weather resources.

Houghton Academy opportunities
New initiatives at Houghton Academy, which include availability of a scholarship program for area students attending the private school and a growing number of its students being able to obtain Houghton University college credit, also were noted.

The facility has experienced significant growth in its student body this school year and is continuing to accept new pupils on an ongoing basis.
