Two separate Family Day Celebrations will be held Saturday and Monday in Scio and Friendship, reflecting a national observance designed to focus on the benefit of joint family activities all year around.
The Family Matters committee of the Partners for Prevention in Allegany County (PPAC) will hold a 10AM to 2PM Saturday, September 23, event at Genesis Bible Church, 4193 State Route 19 South, Belmont (Scio), with fun and games being provided by nearly 20 Allegany County agencies.
On Monday, September 25, several Friendship churches will host a 5PM to 7PM Family Day Celebration and Wellness Fair at Bible Baptist Church, 43 West Main Street, with a free hot dog and chips meal, kids games, community resources, and a multitude of prizes and giveaways.
Family Day, held annually on the fourth Monday in September, celebrates simple, everyday activities which parents can do with their kids, like sharing a meal, playing a game, or asking about their day.
Founded over 20 years ago by the national Center on Addiction, studies have found that these low-cost focuses for bringing families together can create strong, healthy relationships which can help prevent future drug use.
Parents having a warm, supportive relationship with their children, organizers say, is linked to better judgment, increased self-control, stronger social skills, self-confidence, better emotional responses, improved school performance, and resilience, all strengths which can help reduce these risks for children.
