A new First Step Family Resource Center became a reality in Wellsville today as the ribbon was cut for the new facility.

Representatives of state and federal legislative representatives joined Mayor Randy Shayler, who cited the “village benefit,” in lauding the addition to the community.

Robin Fuller, in blue, coordinator of the Allegany County Early Childhood Development Coalition, prepares to cut ribbon for the First Step Family Resource Center.

Located in the former Hamilton Shoe Store at 83 North Main Street, the center will open for programming on Monday, March 4, with five days a week of educational programs, free family play times, special parent/child activities, and more.

A calendar for each month will be available on its website at http://tinyurl.com/yttxw7kf and Facebook page.

A variety of services will be offered at the site for birth through five years of age and their caregivers, including:

Infant and Toddler Play Center: Imagination play, building center, sensor play, arts and crafts, music and movement, and emotional wellness activities.

Family Literacy Zone: Dolly Parton Imagination Library of free monthly books for children from birth to entering school, story time activities, and alphabet and numbers learning.

Parenting: Support groups, education programs and workshops, cooking and nutrition education, and childhood development screenings.

Support: Information and referral to other assists, Every Bottom Covered diaper distribution, and child passenger safety seat services.

The Center will be open from 12:30PM to 4:30PM Mondays, 9AM to 3PM Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 2PM to 7PM Thursdays.

Wellsville Mayor Randy Shayler cites the village benefit of the new First Step Family Resource Center during grand opening ceremonies today.

The facility includes a parent education area, age-appropriate learning centers, a computer workstation, and full kitchen as it promotes language and early literacy, arts, crafts and creativity, physical activity and motor skills, social and emotional growth, health and well-being, family resilience, and awareness of and access to local services.

The new venture is a program of Ardent Solutions of Wellsville, in concert with the Allegany County Early Childhood Development Coalition, and is funded in part by the Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York Blue Fund.
