A FLASH FREEZE now is being projected for Allegany County, NY and the region, starting before sunrise Friday, after rain and temperatures in the mid-to-high 40s the day before start to plunge and turn to snow and ice as an Arctic cold front moves into the area.
The NOAA NWS Weather Prediction Center, on the map accompanying this story, shows the expected arrival time of the occurrence (an hour sooner in Western New York than the Central Standard Time being shown).
The US National Weather Service Buffalo NY is forecasting the “powerful winter storm” will have low impact Thursday during the rain, but will rapidly jump to high impact into the weekend as temperatures drop and winds pick up.
Temperatures only will reach into the teens from Friday night through at least Monday morning, but strong winds will create below zero wind chills throughout the period, resulting in the coldest Christmas in years, according to various reports.
The rain Thursday also will wash away salt residue on highways and other hard surfaces, resulting in potentially hazardous travel, particularly at the onset of the Flash Freeze period during the Friday morning commute.
