Free diaper services for low-income families are expanding

Free infant floor and booster seats are being added to free diaper services available to income-eligible families in Allegany and Western Cattaraugus counties.

Buffalo-based Every Bottom Covered, Inc., has acquired 800 Upseats, a 3-in-1 ergonomic floor and booster seat which encourages upright posture and healthy hip development in infants, and will be sharing the items with the Allegany County Early Childhood Development Coalition.

The product, donated by a Canadian company, is used for playtime, feedings, and other activities where babies need to be upright.

The Coalition has been partnering with Every Bottom Covered since last year, distributing diapers to some 400 eligible and enrolled families in Allegany and Western Cattaraugus counties.

Robin Fuller of Ardent Solutions, Inc., Coalition coordinator, says some three-quarters of diaper recipients are from Allegany County, with current intentions to expand product offerings to other baby and infant hygiene and safety products.

She said the free diaper service is a critical need for low-income parents.

“One in three families suffers from diaper needs in the U.S.,” she reports. “Based on present funding in New York State and many other areas in the United States, families cannot purchase diapers with food stamps.

“Babies who remain too long in a soiled diaper are exposed to increased health risks and concerns. Diaper need creates additional stress and worries for the family as well.

“Even in free and subsidized facilities, most childcare centers require parents to provide a day’s supply of disposable diapers. Therefore, many parents cannot go to work or school if they cannot leave their babies in childcare.”
