Free emergency backpack kits at Friendship and Houghton seminars for winter and all year round

The benefits of a free, all-weather emergency backpack kit, to be given out at seminars in Friendship and Houghton next month, have become apparent during recent power outages and travel on snow and windswept roads.

Required registrations are underway for limited seating for the New York National Guard Citizen Preparedness Corps trainings, to be held from 6:30PM to 8:30PM, Thursday, February 8, at Houghton Academy, 9790 Thayer Street, and repeated from 1:30PM to 3:30PM Saturday, February 10, at Friendship Bible Baptist Church, 43 West Main Street.

The free sessions are being coordinated by an outreach alliance of Friendship churches, Houghton Academy, and Allegany Hope Community News.

Information will be presented on how to help protect oneself, family members, and others from all types of disaster situations, such as fires, floods, winter and summer storms, and other natural and man-made occurrences, through awareness, proper preparation and response.

Organizers say the trainings are particularly valuable in preparing for weather events such as the ones which have been occurring in Allegany County.

Households can store the backpack go-kits in a closet or other location, where they are quick to access during an emergency, or in the trunk of a car when traveling.

Pre-registration required
Pre-registration of each attending family member is required to obtain one free backpack per household, which includes emergency items such as a first aid kit, flashlight, AM/FM radio, batteries, glow sticks, emergency food, water containers, plastic coverings, work gloves, Duct tape and more.

Required registration for limited seating is available:
