Free emergency kits to be provided at Friendship and Houghton Citizen Preparedness Corps workshops

A free emergency backpack kit is being made available to area households next month during two New York National Guard Citizen Preparedness Corps workshops in Friendship and Houghton, coordinated by an outreach alliance of Friendship churches, Houghton Academy, and Allegany Hope Community News.

The sessions, which require pre-registration, are being held from 6:30PM to 8:30PM, Thursday, February 8, at the Houghton school at 9790 Thayer Street, and 1:30PM to 3:30PM Saturday, February 10, at Friendship Bible Baptist Church, 43 West Main Street.

Information will be presented on how to help protect oneself, family members, and others from all types of disaster situations, such as fires, floods, winter and summer storms, and other natural and man-made occurrences, through awareness, proper preparation and response.

Organizers say the trainings are particularly valuable in preparing for events such as the ones which occurred over the weekend and are forecast for this coming week.

Pre-registration of attending family members is required to obtain one free backpack per household, which includes emergency items such as a first aid kit, flashlight, AM/FM radio, batteries, glow stick, emergency food, water containers, plastic coverings, work gloves, Duct tape and more.

Required registration for limited seating is available:

– Online at for the Friendship event, or for Houghton,
– At the Friendship Free Library, 44 West Main Street, or
– By contacting Allegany Hope, a national Weather-Ready Nation AmbassadorTM, at (585) 664-9989.

Those who wish to attend either of the sessions should register as soon as possible to secure limited seating.
