Frozen fruit items at Aldi and other retailers under recall

A voluntary recall of specific frozen fruit items, linked to pineapple provided by a third-party supplier, and sold at Aldi stores in New York State, along with other grocery retailers under various names, has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that the organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, and can .cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, although no reports have yet been received of illnesses associated with this voluntary recall.

Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the agency reports, but consumers concerned about an illness should contact a physician.

The product varieties were distributed to a variety of stores in multiple states, including Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Target, and Associated Wholesale Grocers.
