The Genesee River Wilds Annual Float, scheduled for Saturday between Wellsville and the Town of Amity, was postponed this morning due to low water levels. A new date hasn’t yet been determined.
Organizers, in a Facebook post, said “the river is currently at just 22 percent of normal levels and classified as ‘very low.’
“Under these conditions, our 3-4 hour float would likely take twice as long to complete, and kayakers would be forced to carry their boats along numerous sections of the journey,” they said.
The decision, the first due to low water flows, was made after organization members surveyed the route yesterday and determined proceeding with the float is “not in the best interest of our participants having the best possible experience on the Genesee,” noting that although some rain is forecast for today and Friday it isn’t expected to significantly improve water levels.”
Those who pre-registered for the Float via TicketLeap will not be charged, organizers said, with the post-Float party at the ending site in Amity also being postponed.
Individuals desiring to be notified when a new date is scheduled can monitor the organization’s Facebook page or can request notice via email by sending a message to geneseeriverwilds@gmail.com, asking to be placed on a list.
