Heat Advisories in effect in neighboring counties, nearly there in Allegany

HEAT ADVISORIES have been posted for neighboring Steuben and Livingston counties east and north today as temperatures are forecast to rise above 95 degrees, with heat in Central Allegany County expected at only slightly below that by late afternoon.

Potential for showers and thunderstorms at times also are in the forecast over the next week, with heavy rain, with a Marginal Risk of excessive amounts in Southeastern Allegany County east tomorrow and the possibility for the entire county Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) and its Weather Prediction Center (WPC).

The Heat Advisories are in effect from 11AM to 8PM today.

Take precautions
In addition to being aware generally of the needs of vulnerable populations, the NWS is urging everyone to “drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

“Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside,” it says, and “when possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

“Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

“Heat stroke is an emergency!” it declares. “Call 9 1 1.”
