Houghton Academy adds two significant staff members

Houghton Academy has added a prime administrator and a music program coordinator to its staff.

Karen Pennington and Nicholas Nicassio

Head of School Toby A. Travis reports that Karen Pennington, a former public school teacher in Chautauqua County and author of Sunday school, Bible study, discipleship development and church leadership training curricula, has joined the private Christian middle-high school staff as the new academic dean.

In addition, Nicholas Nicassio, conductor of the Brooklyn Conservatory Chorale who, for the past dozen years also has been the principal conductor and artistic coordinator of the National Children’s Chorus, has become the Academy’s music coordinator.

Travis says that Pennington “embodies the spirit of Houghton Academy’s mission to offer young people a college preparatory education within the framework of a Christian worldview, and prepare students to LIVE authentically, LEARN deeply, LEAD globally, and LOVE boldly for the glory of God.”

She currently is completing her masters of divinity degree at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., after completing a bachelor’s degree in education ministries from Houghton University and a master’s degree at Union Seminary in New York City.

Nicassio is described by the head of school as having “a passion for blending his love of music with his love and commitment as a follower of Jesus Christ. With great anticipation, we watch to see what God accomplishes through Nick’s ministry at the Academy.”

The musician holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of California, a master of music degree in voice from the Manhattan School of Music, and a doctorate in musical arts in choral conducting from Rutgers University.

In addition to his conducting activities, Nicassio has been the music director of Saint Saviour Church in Brooklyn, NY, a film composer, and music director of The Play Group Theatre in White Plains, NY.

Houghton Academy is an international boarding school with a combined local and international student body which grew significantly during the past school year.

It maintains an open enrollment for students, enabling them to be accepted into the school at any time and also announced recently a tuition scholarship program for area students.
