Jazz and symphony orchestra concerts being presented this week at Houghton University

Free back-to-back musical performances are being presented this week by Houghton University Greatbatch School of Music groups.

The Jazz Ensemble, performing from 7:30PM to 8:30PM Thursday, November 17, will provide music from a variety of jazz composers and student soloists, with its Symphony Orchestra performing at the same time the following night, November 18, with works by renowned composers.

Both events will be held in the Wesley Chapel at 1 Willard Avenue.

The Jazz Ensemble consists of a standard-sized big band with students playing classic jazz styles from the 1920s to the present.

A backbone of this repertoire is the music that developed out of the swing era and was seasoned by influences such as bebop, cool jazz, and hardbop. More recent styles such as fusion from the 70s and 80s and diverse forms of Latin jazz also are explored.

The Symphony Orchestra is comprised of 50 to 60 orchestral musicians, including strings, winds, and percussion.

Both music and non-music majors participate in this ensemble, including players from the broader community.
