BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: New COVID-19 cases are continuing at high levels in Allegany County, with Jones Memorial Hospital also admitting one new patient for the virus each day from Monday through yesterday.
Data received from the Allegany County Department of Health today, pursuant to our daily Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests for localized information, which the county continues to require, shows a jump in new cases in the Wellsville zip code last Friday, leading to a double-digit result of 13 for all of last week.
Fillmore ended up with seven and Cuba six, with a smattering of cases in other zip codes around the county.
For the first five days of this week, through Thursday, Bolivar is showing six, Cuba and Wellsville five and Scio four, with a total of 37 new positives so far this week in the county. Complete numbers for the week, based on the history of recent county responses, isn’t expected until this time next week.
The total for last week, as we reported earlier in the week, was 65, more than 10 times the comparable period for last year.
These only are reported cases, however, with no accurate tally for home tests although Allegany County does obtain some data through online self-reporting. Last year’s totals, in contrast, were being gathered through reporting of all tests.
New cases for the past 12 days are included on our chart which accompanies this story.
Of the four new hospitalizations at Jones Memorial Hospital this week, according to reports to the State Health Department, all but one have been discharged.
Cases included one each in the 45-to-54 and 85 years-and-over age brackets, and two in the 65-to-74 age range.
Olean General Hospital also has been averaging one new case a day, with seven currently admitted and one of those being in intensive care. St. James Hospital in Hornell has admitted three individuals this week, but all have been discharged as of yesterday.
Allegany County is continuing to request that those testing positive through self or home tests enter the information at https://bit.ly/3zymEWF to aid in better determination as to the number of cases in the county and their general locations.
