New COVID cases drift downward; hospitalizations up over the weekend

BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: New Allegany County, NY, COVID-19 cases continued to drift downward from an interim peak four weeks ago but still are at higher levels than last year, with weekend hospitalizations jumping.

The Allegany County Department of Health, responding to our daily Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests for localized information, is reporting at least 52 new cases last week, compared with 65 for the week ended July 30, and 20, or 72 percent less, for the week ended August 21 last year.

Accurate positives currently are unknown for this year due to home testing, although the county is collecting some online self-reported data.

Last year’s numbers were based solely on lab test results, although an unknown number of positives could have been asymptomatic.

Jones Memorial Hospital has reported three new COVID cases from the weekend to the State Health Department, joining one from Friday and a fifth from last Monday.

The total of five current hospitalizations includes three admitted for the virus and another two who were admitted initially for other reasons. Two individuals are in intensive care.

Two patients each are in the 65 to 74-year-old and 85-and-over ranges, with one being 75-to-84. Nearly all recent hospitalizations have been 65-and-over.

Cuba Memorial Hospital Inc. also is reporting one COVID hospitalization over the weekend, not admitted due to COVID, with nine currently hospitalized at Olean General Hospital, seven of them not admitted due to the virus. No hospitalizations currently are at St. James Hospital in Hornell.

There have been no reported deaths since July 18.

COVID cases by zip code last week found Wellsville at 10, the same as the week before; seven at Cuba, up three; and five at Bolivar, down four. The remainder were scattered in various parts of the county.

The full breakdown for the past two weeks is shown on our chart which accompanies this story.
