New York State Free Fishing Days start this weekend

New York State will begin its six 2024 Free Fishing Days schedule Saturday and Sunday as part of the Presidents Day Weekend observance.

During the February 17-18 weekend, both state residents and non-residents, 16 years of age and older, can fish without a freshwater fishing license. Children under 16 are always able to fish free.

Additional observances will occur June 29-30, National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 28, and Veterans Day on November 11.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) says “these days offer the perfect opportunity to try out fishing for the first time, to get back into the sport, or to take a friend or the whole family along to fish.”

It notes that although no license is needed, all other fishing regulations apply.

At least six Allegany County libraries loan fishing poles.
