Orthodox Christianity and numerous musical events are scheduled this week for the public at Houghton

The director of communications at the Orthodox Christian Studies Center at Fordham University in New York City, described as a seasoned expert with over 15 years of experience within the Moscow Patriarchate, will present this year’s Second Annual Shirley A. Mullen Lectureship tomorrow night at Houghton University, while a series of musical and other activities this week start to bring the academic year to a close.

Sergei Chapnin, who also is chief editor of Dary (The Gifts), an almanac of contemporary Christian culture, and a curator of exhibitions on contemporary Christian art, will discuss Navigating the Crossroads: Orthodox Christianity in the Modern World – Between War and Beauty from 7:30PM to 8:30PM on Monday, April 15, in Wesley Chapel at 1 Willard Avenue.

Traditionally characterized as a Church of Tradition, Orthodoxy has witnessed the instrumentalization of Tradition in recent times, according to information about the presentation, and “notably, Tradition has been weaponized, especially by the Russian Orthodox Church, since the initial days of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.”

This transformation will be examined as it “raises crucial theological questions about the Orthodox Church’s identity, unity, and response to contemporary challenges.”

Background in regard to the event is available at https://tinyurl.com/HU-Sergei-Chapnin. Mullen, for whom the lectureship is named, is the immediate past president of Houghton University.

Also, this week, the University Jazz Ensemble will perform on Tuesday, April 16; the Men’s and Women’s Choir on Friday, April 19, and the Houghton Wind Ensemble on Saturday, April 20, each from 7:30PM to 9PM in the Wesley Chapel.

In addition, student and faculty performances have been scheduled for various evening times on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Recital Hall of the Center for the Arts.

Additional musical and other events are being held through Monday, April 29, with an events calendar available at https://tinyurl.com/HU-Events-Calendar.

The campus dining hall, located in the campus center, is open to the public during the day for low cost, multi-station buffet meals, with further information as to hours, menus and costs available at https://tinyurl.com/Houghton-Dining.
