Outreach to area seniors re-introduced at Houghton University

Some dozen new activities, many of them free and with more being considered, are being added to a re-started Houghton University outreach ministry for older adults.

Lists of opportunities for an ENCORE! group were provided last week by Phyllis Gaerte, senior director of university alumni and community engagement, during a Houghton re-introduction gathering of current members and interested seniors after two years of interruptions due to the pandemic.

ENCORE! is designed to provide educational, recreational, and socially enrichment experiences for senior adults, with the ministry creating opportunities to build friendships, relax, and immerse oneself in wellness, creativity, and learning.

The group, which currently numbers some 200 individuals, has been engaged in several free activities in recent months, including:

Senior exercise on Mondays Wednesday and Friday mornings at Houghton Wesleyan Church, across from the university, needlecrafts projects and education, table games, and a music circle of string and percussion instrumentalists who join in a weekly facilitated evening of pickup music.

Recreation club and aquatic participation also are available for a fee, along with reduced rates for full multi-selection meals, including breakfasts at $5.25, lunch at $6.50 and dinner at $9.75, which includes sales tax.

A Wednesday morning social hour in the JAVA coffee shop also provides 50 percent savings on orders, including takeout lunches which also can be eaten in the ENCORE! suite which has been set aside on the first floor of the Campus Center.

New offerings include a book club, community choir development, rotating supper club, field trips, travelogues, pickle ball instruction and play, and classes in ceramic mug making, calligraphy, watercolor painting, and ukulele.

Additional opportunities will be offered depending on interests indicated and facilitator or instructor availability.

A one-time membership fee of $15 includes an identification card, parking pass and additional components. Weekly email notifications also are provided for on-campus activities and events which are available to members.
