Senior health education series starts next week in Friendship

An education series for older adults seeking to learn how to stay healthy is starting next week in Friendship, with a $30 gift card provided to those attending all six sessions.

The Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE) will be offered from 1PM to 2:30PM on Mondays and Thursdays from June 10-27, at the Friendship Free Library, 44 West Main Street.

Those completing the course will receive a $30 Dollar General gift card from the Allegany County Office for the Aging and Allegany Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, facilitators of the series.

Topics being presented during the sessions include:
— The aging process and how to make healthy lifestyle choices;
— Celebrating this stage of life and the resulting benefits;
— Risk factors and behaviors to avoid to stay healthy;
— How alcohol, and prescription and over-the-counter medications affect older adults differently and how to avoid issues with them; and
— Simple tools to help one feel more empowered about his or her health and the healthcare one receives.

WISE is a national, evidence-based initiative designed to empower older adults to advocate for their own health, make healthy lifestyle choices, and navigate use of medications and substances like alcohol.

Required registration is available at aweaver@alleganycouncil.org or (585) 593-1920 x719.
