Severe thunderstorms possible today in lower Allegany County, with oppressive heat next week

BREAKING: There is a Marginal Risk of severe thunderstorms today in southern Allegany County east and south as the area prepares for hot weather for the next week, which is being termed “oppressive” on at least Tuesday and Wednesday.

The greatest chance of thunderstorms in most of the county is late this morning, with potential for wind and hail increasing in the southeastern tip of the county east and south his afternoon, as shown on the accompanying map from the National Weather Service (NWS) at Binghamton.

The Allegany County path is the portion just to the west of the outlined area, which includes Steuben County east, but any map points can vary by 25 miles.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has moved the potential impact area more to the northwest since last night, now including the Allegany County impact area, along with more of Potter County.

High temperatures and humidity will begin moving into the area from the west at the beginning of the week, with forecasts currently showing near 100-degree heat indexes and the oppressive humidity on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Warm nighttime temperatures of around 70 in Central Allegany County will add to a lack of relief.
