BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: New Allegany County, NY, COVID-19 cases continued to climb last week, although at a lower rate than the week before, but is two-thirds higher than last year at the same time for those positives which are known.
The Allegany County Department of Health, responding to our continuing daily Freedom of Information requests for localized information, reports 88 new cases through Saturday, compared with 82 for the week before. This contrasts with 53 for the same week a year ago.
Although new positives were spread through many parts of the county, the notable jump was in the Bolivar zip code, with a dozen new cases versus seven the week before.
Wellsville was the only other in double digits, but falling from 25 to 16 between the two weeks.
Other significant increases, although in single digits, were Alfred, from one to four; Andover, from three to seven; Belmont, from two to five; Little Genesee, from one to four; and Scio, from one to five.
Our complete tally for the past two weeks appears in the accompanying chart. Another 16 new cases for been reported this week, through yesterday.
There were five COVID-19 hospitalizations Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville during the week’s time ending Friday, with three remaining in the hospital at the end of the reporting period to the State Health Department. Only one of those still hospitalized was admitted originally for the virus.
At Cuba Memorial Hospital Inc., two COVID-19 patients were hospitalized as of Friday, none of whom originally were admitted for the virus; at Olean General Hospital, there were 19 with the virus, 10 having been admitted during the past seven days and 10 of them due to COVID-19, and at St. James Hospital in Hornell, three were hospitalized on Friday, all admitted due to the virus, with two during the past week.
Olean General currently has the third highest positivity rate in the state, although New York State Department of Health data is only based on the number of individuals who have been reported by testing facilities, without consideration of home tests.
Allegany County has helped overcome to an unknown extent this reporting obstacle, which wasn’t in effect last year at this time, with voluntary online reporting of home test results.
The difference between state and county reported cases for Allegany is nearly 2,800 positives of the 12,720 cases which have been recorded since the start of the pandemic.
Allegany County is continuing to request that those testing positive through self or home tests enter the information at https://bit.ly/3zymEWF to aid in better determination as to the number of cases in the county and their general locations.
