Wind gusts already nearing 50MPH as temperatures drop and senior meal sites close in Allegany County

WINTER STORM UPDATE #1 – FRIDAY: Allegany County Office for the Aging congregant meal sites are closed and home-delivered meals are canceled today as temperatures drop and winds already have picked up to near 50MPH.

A WINTER STORM ADVISORY, with many components goes into effect at 10AM, through 7PM Christmas Day, with other counties experiencing varying types of weather warnings.

Wellsville Airport recordings
Changes can be seen at the Wellsville airport, where at 7AM today the actual temperature was 39 degrees, with highest winds from the south at eight miles per hours, resulting in a windchill of 33 degrees.

Two hours later, the airport was recording a drop in temperature to freezing at 32 degrees, with 30MPH winds gusting to 48MPH, resulting in a windchill of 18.

Special Weather Statement
The US National Weather Service Buffalo NY is continuing at this hour a Special Weather Statement for Allegany and counties to the west:

“***ARCTIC COLD FRONT WILL BRING A RAPID CHANGE OVER TO SNOW WITH VERY GUSTY WINDS AND A RAPID DROP IN TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING***

“Arctic cold front will quickly work northeast across Western New York this morning. Rain will continue to change over to snow with temperatures quickly falling below freezing behind the front.

“This change over to snow has already occurred across Chautauqua County and will work northeast across the Niagara Frontier through 10AM.

‘Wind will also pick up, with wind gusts expected as high as 65 to 70 mph today into tonight.

“With temperatures quickly falling below freezing, any wet surfaces that have not been treated will have the potential to flash freeze creating hazardous travel conditions.

“If traveling across the area expect conditions to rapidly change and deteriorate throughout the day today.”

Future outlook and information resources
Temperatures are forecast to remain at sub-zero windchills, as low as -24 degrees from 7PM tonight to 7AM Saturday, for Central Allegany County, with possible lower temperatures in other areas.
