WINTER WEATHER UPDATE #7: Merry Christmas!
The WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for Allegany County, NY, in effect for the past three days due to an Arctic blast across much of the country, has been shortened to 4PM today as final wind gusts of more than 30MPH are projected to end at that time across the county.
There now are less than a dozen scattered power outages being reported by electric utilities, all in the central and northern portions of the county, with wind chill and hazardous weather alerts to the east already having expired or been canceled.
WINTER STORM WARNINGS are continuing for Cattaraugus and Wyoming counties west into early Monday morning. Low wind chills also are continuing to be projected by the US National Weather Service State College PA this morning for McKean and Potter counties in Pennsylvania.
Slippery conditions continue today
For Allegany and Livingston counties, the US National Weather Service Buffalo NY is forecasting continuing slippery road conditions today as “cold wind chills as low as 15 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.”
Minor snow totals are being forecast through Tuesday, with the greatest possibility projected in Central Allegany County between 8AM and 11AM today.
Snow projections through Tuesday morning are shown on the graphic accompanying this story, along with our insets of NWS forecasts for the county through Wednesday.
High wind gusts still in the forecast
Potential for the high wind gusts are projected between 11AM and 4PM when the Advisory ends, three hours before previous projections. Surface winds, which are expected to reach 20MPH during peak wind gust times, will diminish during the day to around 10MPH during the overnight hours into Monday and Tuesday.
Although air temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-teens by noontime today before falling off to high single digits, wind chill factors only will rise to around the zero degrees mark until late Monday morning.
Temperatures then will continue to rise for the remainder of the week, with forecasts currently showing high temperatures just above 50 degrees on Friday.
