Winter Weather and Wind Advisories in effect at 11PM, Flood Warning activated in Olean area

BREAKING: New weather advisories and a warning have been activated in the Greater Allegany County area due to anticipated significant wind gusts, dropping temperatures which will turn rain to snow, and flooding conditions already occurring in the Olean area.

A current breakdown of weather alerts for Allegany and neighboring areas, as issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) at Buffalo, include:

— A WIND ADVISORY from 11PM tonight through 2PM Saturday for Allegany County, and already in effect in some nearby areas and expiring later on Saturday. Gusts are expected to reach as high as 45MPH at peak periods.

— A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for Allegany and Wyoming counties west, with up to eight inches of snow on higher elevations in the extreme northwestern tip of Allegany and decreasing to an inch or so in the southeast during the same time period.

— A FLOOD WARNING for the Allegheny River at Olean, and including Salamanca, until early Monday afternoon.

The NWS reports that at 7:46PM tonight the water height was at 11.44 feet, with a bankfull stage being 10 feet.

At 12 feet, flooding is possible on Union Street in Allegany and East Riverside Drive, one-to-three miles upstream of Olean, with some farmlands along the river also being impacted.

The river is expected to rise above flood stage late tonight to a crest of 14.1 feet early Sunday morning, according to forecasters, before falling below flood stage again by Monday morning.

The anticipated crest, they say, compares to a previous level of 13.9 feet on January 14, 2018.
