Free Fishing Day in New York State is Saturday

The next to last 2026 Free Fishing Day in New York State Saturday also will draw focus to National Hunting and Fishing Day.

The September 26 event provides an opportunity for both state residents and non-residents, 16 years of age and older to fish during the day without a freshwater fishing license . Children under 16 are always able to fish free.

The year’s final Free Fishing Day will be on Veterans Day, which is on Wednesday, November 11.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) says that “these days offer the perfect opportunity to try out fishing for the first time, to get back into the sport, or to take a friend or the whole family along to fish.”

It notes that although no license is needed, all other fishing regulations apply.

At least six Allegany County libraries loan out fishing poles and associated items.
