A combination of seven different free musical performances, starting tonight, will highlight Houghton University’s Greatbatch School of Music community presentations during the next two weeks.
The selections will include guest, faculty and graduating student performances and a combined concert by two Houghton music groups, all being held in the Center for the Arts Recital Hall at 1 Willard Avenue, except for performances noted in the Wesley Chapel.
The line-up includes:
Monday, October 5 – 7:30PM-9PM: Guest Pianist Fabio Machetti, a Lucca, Italy, native and Houghton University graduate, will present pieces by Bach, Ligeti, and Liszt.
The performer, who has played in many Italian and American cities, along with Poland, France, and Germany, where he gave a solo recital for the 2011 Liszt bicentenary celebrations in Bayreuth, is an associate professor of piano at Washington State University.
Wednesday, October 7 – 6:30PM-7:30PM in the Wesley Chapel: Kevin Lee, a Masters in Music candidate, will perform a recital of organ pieces representing diverse forms, styles, and dynamics, with all but one piece by composers such as Bach, Pachelbel, Mendelssohn, Vierne, and contemporary artist Craig Phillipston, all centered In the Key of D!
Friday, October 9 – 7PM-8:30PM: A faculty/guest recital will feature Soo Yeon Kim, assistant professor of violin and viola at Houghton, who will be joined by Daniel Ketter, assistant professor of cello at the University of Kansas, and Julian Jaeyoung Kim, associate professor of piano at Washington State University.
A presentation of Piano Trios will pair two works by Beethoven and Brahms with a contemporary work for violin and cello by Lee Actor, all designed to add a fresh, rhythmic, and percussive edge to the concert.
The performances will provide a preview of the Kims’ preparation for a European tour next summer.
Monday, October 12 – 6:30PM-7:30PM: Jason Decker, Houghton instructor for low brass, will provide an evening of tuba while being joined by other musicians for presentation of Have You Ever?
The recital will highlight the tuba’s expressive voice as both a solo instrument and an ensemble foundation, combining with Kimberly Prins Moeller, associate professor of voice, a mezzo-soprano, Rachel Decker on flute, Laurie Smith on piano, and The Letchworth Valley Brass.
A featured piece uses poetry written by third graders about various animals, with children being encouraged to attend the concert.
Wednesday, October 14 – 6:30PM-7:30PM: William Allen, a music composition student, will present his graduate recital.
Wednesday, October 14 – 8PM-9PM: Prins Moeller will return for a faculty performance with Sharon Johnson, professor of piano and coordinator of collaborative piano, to present A Woman’s Life and Love which pairs the song cycles of romantic composer Robert Schumann’s Frauenliebe und Lieben with contemporary composer Libby Larsen’s Love After 1950.
Thursday, October 15 – 7:30PM-9:30PM: The Houghton Wind Ensemble and Houghton Symphony Orchestra will provide a joint concert in the Wesley Chapel.
A faculty art exhibit also is open from 9AM to 6PM Mondays – Saturdays, through Thursday, October 15, in the Ortlip Gallery in the Center for the Arts.
