Excessive rain threat forecast for Thursday, Saturday night and Sunday

UPDATE #1 – 7AM Thursday: The chances for heavy rain have moved south into Northern Pennsylvania counties where forecasters say that locally heavy rain may result in isolated instances of flooding this afternoon and evening especially in locations that can experience rapid runoff.

In the meantime, for Allegany County, today is forecast to start humid, with scattered showers and isolated thunder around the region.

A cold front will ease its way across our region today, slowly eroding the humidity, ending the showers and bringing a brief period of fair weather starting tonight.

Tomorrow will be noticeably less humid with plenty of sunshine before rain again sets in Saturday night and Sunday during which as much as an inch of rain now is forecast for the central part of the county.

BREAKING WEATHER: A frontal zone stalled just south of the area will bring another period of showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly overnight through the first half of Thursday, with up to three-quarters of an inch of rain, and possibly more in storms, falling before a brief period of drier, cooler conditions expectedly arrives Thursday night through Saturday morning.

National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters say the rain could be excessive in some areas which has a Marginal Risk for flash flooding.

The threat then is renewed Saturday night and through at least early afternoon on Sunday when potential downpours can bring even more rain to Central Allegany County, particularly during early morning hours.

Temperatures are expected to reach into the low 70s late Thursday afternoon and then the mid-to-upper 60s through the weekend and into next week.

Weather alerts
Readers are cautioned that our weather updates are not a substitute for instant alerting systems emanating from the NWS. Preparedness authorities recommend at least two notification processes for alerts and other warnings.

The NWS provides emergency alerts online and through its NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts, with an available stations listing available at https://tinyurl.com/NOAA-Weather-Radio-Frequencies.

New York State issues free basic higher level alerts only, via email, text, telephone or fax, including availability of Amber alerts, road closures, sex offender relocations, and other information at https://tinyurl.com/NY-Alert .

It also is promoting a less robust system of alerts, able to be obtained by texting 3-3-3-1-1-1.

Allegany County now is using an Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) system for alerts in specific geographic areas, although this activity only is activated when an event actually is occurring.

Allegany Hope is a Weather-Ready Nation AmbassadorTM and, due to Allegany County’s location being in or bordering three NWS forecast offices, Allegany Hope Community News provides what has become the premier site in consolidated forecast and other information for the area from the NWS at Buffalo for Allegany County north and west, Binghamton for Steuben County east, and State College, Pa., for Potter and McKean counties in Pennsylvania, along with regional and national data.
